Your Guide To Buying a 4 Slice Toaster

By Yehudah Posnick

Toasters for household use have been around since 1909. Later, in 1925, they made pop-up toasters, where you could time how dark you want your toast. That was good for two slices of bread. But if you have a big family, you would like the option of preparing a large breakfast quickly. Having a 4-slice toaster is a way of achieving that. They are essentially two 2-slice toasters, side-by-side. For example, you can toast two slices lightly, and the other two more dark brown. It's worthwhile to get familiar with the other features of 4-slice toasters.

We've put together this guide to help you select the 4-slice toaster that answers to your needs. It'll help you:

    • Choose the right type of 4-slice toaster,

    • See useful tips about that type of 4-slice toaster,

    • Read reviews of different brands of 4-slice toaster, and what customers are saying,

    • Select the right brand of 4-slice toaster, and

    • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Here are some typical functions of today's toasters:

    • Toast—These accommodate slices of regular bread, and toast both sides.

    • Bagel—This is an option to toast only one side (you don't need to toast the outside of a bagel or English muffin, just the inside). Make sure you know which side is toasting—otherwise you might end up toasting the crust of the bagel by mistake.

    • Defrost—If you put frozen bread or bagels in the toaster, the defrost option adds extra time to defrost the bread as well as toast it.

    • Reheat—This is useful if the bread is already toasted, but you're not ready to serve it yet. It'll keep the toast warm, without retoasting it.

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

    • Easy cleaning: Some toasters have a removable tray, to catch crumbs from the toast. It's best to clean out that tray after a week of use, since the crumbs tend to accumulate. Also, when cleaning the toaster, you should unplug it first, and invert it, to shake all the crumbs out. Don't insert a fork or other sharp metal object in the toaster—it might damage one of the heating elements.

    • Cancel option: If you want to stop the toasting in the middle, many toasters have a “cancel” button, that pops out the toast in the middle of the cycle.

    • Toast lift: Some toasters have a toast lift button, to allow you to push the bread a little further up. This way you don't have to insert your fingers into the area of the heating elements to get the toast out.

    • Save stale bread: If you see your bread is getting stale, making toast out of it is a great way of salvaging it. Toast can stay a lot longer than fresh bread without getting moldy.

    • Extra-Wide Slots: This allows you to toast more than just sliced bread: English muffins, bagels, and waffles are also an option.

    • Digital Electronic: Some 4-slice toasters are digital, where you can program when they shut off. This is useful in instances where the toast gets stuck in the toaster—you have a back-up option to keep it from burning your toast.

    • Settings: Toasters will have number settings, usually where the lowest number will yield light toast, and the higher numbers will give darker toast.

    • Cool-touch Exterior: This is a nice feature, to make sure that the toaster doesn't get hot on the outside, even after heavy use.
