Your Guide To Buying a Sling Backpack

By Yehudah Posnick

A sling backpack is a smaller alternative to a backpack, but more spacious than a fanny pack. It is smaller and more lightweight, and is intended to just serve for your bare essentials, plus a few more accessories, such as a Swiss Army knife or flashlight. The fact that you wear it on one shoulder lets you swing it around to get to your gear more quickly. A sling backpack is ideal for bike commuters, where they can carry some bike accessories along with them. At the same time, people want a bag that is secure enough that they can carry their laptop, tablet, or smartphone without them getting damaged. So there are some things you have to consider before making a purchase. Here is a guide to some of the best sling backpacks on the market.

You can distinguish between the types of sling backpacks by how they are worn:

Hip-Style Sling: This is usually a small bag that is carried across the shoulder, and reaches to your hip. These will be relatively small—going around 488 cubic inches in size.

Sling Backpack: These are larger packs, that can be worn as a backpack, or on the chest, for easier access to the contents. They'll typically be over 1200 cubic inches in size.

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

    • Easy access to necessities: People who use a sling backpack will want easy access to a pen and notepad, or their wallet or credit card. Look for bags that have special compartments for the things that you'll need more urgently.

    • As a gym bag: You can use a sling bag to carry your gym shoes and sweaty clothes, separate from other essentials.

    • Quality zippers: Since you might be carrying valuables in your bag, it's best to make sure that the zippers are sturdy. If the teeth of the zipper start to pull apart, you can risk losing your iPod, camera or credit card.

    • Mesh bag: Some bags have a mesh bag that will accommodate a water bottle. You'll certainly want to keep your water bottle separate from delicate electronics, like you iPhone or laptop.

    • Velcro straps: Some bags have Velcro straps, to allow you to adjust the size of each compartment, according to what you put inside. For example, maybe you'll want to pack your digital SLR camera away snugly—a Velcro strap will help you with that.

    • Containment space: You should take note of the interior space of the sling backpack. It will indicate how much you can fit inside. A bag that is 18” in length should be able to fit a laptop.

    • Waist cinches: These allow you to attach the sling backpack close to your body. This way, you can avoid damaging the stuff in your bag—it won't bang around as you're walking or riding your bike.

    • Padding: If you're carrying delicate electronics, you'll want to make sure that it's safe inside your backpack. Check to see that the compartment for your tablet or laptop has adequate padding, so that it doesn't get jostled around.

    • Camera Equipment: There are packs specially made for camera equipment, but you can also use a sling backpack for the same purpose. If you want to carry camera equipment, you'll want that pack to have compartments for small items, like memory sticks and cards, flashes, lenses or tripods. (Some find that their backpack isn't big enough for a tripod, and can only fit a monopod.)

    • Pockets: Some packs have an anti-theft pocket for the most important stuff: money, your passport, and credit cards. At the same time, you'll want to have easy access to things that you need all the time, like your cellphone or headphones.
